OVER 4,000 Thai and foreign tourists visited Maya Bay at Phi Phi island today (Jan. 1) upon its reopening after three-year closure to give nature time to recover, Matichon newspaper said.

Mr. Puttipong Sirimas, governor of Krabi province, said the regional port authority staff had carefully arranged boat tours to this famous bay and for safety these boats were moored at Loh Samah Bay after dropping off the tourists there.

The visitors were allowed to come to Maya Bay in batches of 375 people per hour-long round for a total of 4,100 people a day with this ending at 4 p.m.

They are forbidden from swimming in the sea at Maya Bay as efforts to restore the shore and the seabed continues after previous unbounded tourism had damaged this beautiful spot.

Hotels at Phi Phi island are fully booked till the middle of next week with 40 percent of over 5,000 rooms having reopened so far.
