House okays 2023 budget bill after marathon debate

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES has approved in principle the 2023 budget bill following a three-day marathon debate.

In a wee hour today (June 3), coalition MPs voted 278 against opposition MPs’ 194 votes, giving passage for the 3.18 trillion baht budget bill through its first reading and submitting it to a 72-person extraordinary House committee for scrutiny of the budget.

The yea votes included those of Thai Economic MPs and splinter- party MPs who may have otherwise joined the opposition bloc with the nay votes.

The budget bill which will incur some 695 billion baht in deficit is yet to be returned to the House for approvals in a second and third reading before being forwarded to the Senate for similar legislative process.

The 2023 budget is provided as the last for the Palang Pracharath-led coalition government whose four-year term is scheduled to end next March.
