Thai Liberal woman MP pressed to quit and make room for financier

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THAI LIBERAL MP Thanaporn Somthongdaeng has been allegedly pressed by party leader Seripisut Temiyavej to resign only to give way for one of the party’s financiers to take her place.

Thanaporn said Seripisut has pushed in vain for her resignation as party-listed MP since late last year with intent to get her replaced with whom she referred to as a partisan financier ranking among those on the Thai Liberal Party list for the 2019 election.

That apparently refers to Pitak Santiwongsakul, head of Thai Liberal Party’s electoral campaigns for northern constituencies and ex-MP of Phitsanulok.

Thanaporn commented that she has strongly resisted the pressure not only mounted upon her by Seripisut but others among the rank and file of the party and that she has done nothing wrong to deserve it.

Her comments apparently followed yesterday’s general caucus of Thai Liberal Party during which she was formally deposed as deputy party leader and concurrent member of the party’s executive board – the post which she claimed to have quit by herself and informed the Election Commission accordingly a week earlier.

Nevertheless, Thanaporn said she is still a Thai Liberal Party member so she could keep her MP status intact.

Meanwhile, Seripisut confirmed that he has managed to file a lawsuit against Thanaporn on charges of embezzling some 100,000 baht in fees for party memberships over the last several years.

But he said his party’s executive board will not oust the woman MP as member of the opposition party for fear that she might otherwise effortlessly join a coalition partner to maintain her MP status.
