PM cancels Thailand SHA SHA SHA tourism event amid local opposition

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha today (Sept. 28) ordered the cancellation of the “Thailand SHA SHA SHA” tourism event in Krabi, Phuket and Phang Nga provinces that started on Friday Sept. 24 and was to continue till Sunday Oct. 3 amid strong local objection over coronavirus risk, Thai Rath newspaper said.

Mr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, said the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was spending a budget of 16 million baht in organising this event to boost tourism and drive the local economy.

Tourism and Sports Minister Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn had briefed the Cabinet about holding the event but Gen. Prayut then ordered its cancellation until a more appropriate time.

Meanwhile Krabi Governor Pol. Lt. Col. Kitibodi Prawit also announced the decision of the Krabi Communicable Disease Committee to indefinitely postpone the mini-concerts on his Facebook page today.

Despite the opposition to the tourism event over the current Covid-19 situation in Krabi where the outbreak is still severe TAT had still insisted on continuing with the festivities but compromised by removing the concert stage.
