Rally in front of prison to pressure for protest leaders’ release

MORE people are flocking to a demonstration in front of Bangkok Remand Prison this evening (Feb. 12) to call for the release of four protest leaders incarcerated within, Siam Rath newspaper said.

The rally, held by the New Generation Network of Nonthaburi, has been entitled “Friday Event to Awaken Justice – White Candle.”

The demonstrators want their four leaders, lawyer Anon Nampa, student leader Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, Mr. Somyot Prueksakasemsuk and Mr Patiwat Saraiyaem, also known as “Mor Lam Bank”,  released after they were denied bail and sent to pretrial detention by the Criminal Court on Tuesday over charges of violating the lese majeste law.

Those who had arrived at the rally site had occupied the area in front of the prison and next to the road. Mr. Alek Chokrompruek, a people’s artist, was strumming his guitar and singing as the organizers waited for more people to arrive.

The prison authorities had put up a green construction net over the gates while crowd control police were stationed within.

Traffic in front of the prison was still able to move as the demonstrators stayed on the footpath and did not obstruct it in anyway.
