TWO key protest leaders were taken from the Region 1 Border Police Bureau to the criminal court to request for pre-trial detention at 11 a.m. this morning (Oct. 21), INNnews.co.th reported.
Chanasongkram policemen took the duo, Ms. Panusaya Sitthichirawattanakul, or Rung, leader of Thammasat Alliance and Rally, and Mr. Parit Chivarak, or Penguin, a Thammasat University student and leader of the Free Youth group, to the court to request detention under Section 116 of the Criminal Code.
Meanwhile Dusit policemen detained Mr. Suranat Panprasert, the coordinator of the Active Youth network, on a charge of intending to harm Her Majesty the Queen’s liberty during her motorcade last Wednesday, October 14, and have taken him to Region 1 Border Police Bureau for questioning.
He is the third suspect arrested in this case with Mr. Ekachai Hongkangwan and Mr Boonkueanoon Paothong having been arrested earlier.
All face charges over an incident when the royal motorcade of Her Majesty the Queen, who was accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, passed along Phitsanulok road where a protest was taking place.
Police had cordoned off the route but some of the demonstrators had got through and were seen flashing the three-finger salute as her motorcade passed by.
The offense is under Section 110 of the Penal Code and carries maximum penalty of life imprisonment or imprisonment of 16 to 20 years.
