Cigarettes smuggled from Myanmar seized in the woods

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

MYANMAR cigarettes have been smuggled into Thai territory and dumped in the woods on the border waiting for someone to pick them up.

Kaew Khongwong, chief provincial defense official of Prachuap Khiri Khan, said today (July 1) a total of 160 cartons of Myanmar cigarettes have been found hidden in the woods near Dan Singkhorn village in the capital district of the Thai border province.

The Myanmar cigarettes, branded Xinxing, were suspected to have been carried across the border by some smugglers who have remained at large, the official said.

The smugglers were believed to have dumped the contraband goods in the woods for their partners on the Thai side of the border to pick them up and then sell them to Myanmar migrant workers somewhere in Thailand, he said.

A pack of the smuggled Xinxing cigarettes would only sell for 40 baht, compared to 60 to 95 baht for a pack of other brands of cigarettes in Thailand.
