Two boys killed by electric shock in Mekong River

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

TWO BOYS WERE ELECTROCUTED and drowned as they were swimming in Mekong River in Chiang Rai yesterday (June 23), police said.

The 9-year-old and 11-year-old were among five boys swimming in the ebbing river in Huay Ian village of Wiang Kaen district of the northern province when they were electrocuted in the water near a submersible fish farm lined with electric fences.

The bodies of the drowned boys were retrieved by divers from the river while the other young swimmers were reported safe.

The fish farmer, identified as Boontham Wongchai, was arrested for alleged criminal recklessness which caused the manslaughter.

However, the police have launched investigation into the incident to find out how it occurred that the boys were killed with the electric wires.
